We think diversification is the cornerstone of a successful investment portfolio. A broad mix of investments gives a portfolio the potential to benefit in many different market environments. We don’t expect everything to perform well at the same time. But it should mean it’ll always have some investments in the areas that are doing well.

Building a balanced portfolio, which combines a range of different investment approaches and asset types, is easier said than done though. As is keeping an eye on it, making ongoing decisions and changing investments as needed.

Schroder Managed Balanced does all the hard work. Manager Johanna Kyrklund mainly invests in a selection of Schroders' own funds, tapping into the expertise of several experienced managers. It’s an entire portfolio in a single investment. We think she’s done a good job of growing the fund over the long term, while avoiding some of the risks of investing more adventurously.

We like the fund’s combination of low cost and convenience. We rate Kyrklund as an experienced and highly capable manager and we think her team is one of the best-resourced in the UK. That’s why the fund features on the Wealth 50 list of our favourite funds.

The manager's got the flexibility to invest in high-yield bonds and derivatives which, if used, adds risk.
